India bans Chinese social media apps including TikTok and Weibo

In what looks like a resumption of hostilities, India has tactfully scrapped a whooping 59 social media apps that have links to China.

In a statement, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology which issued a ban on the apps, says it did so in a bid to re-establish India’s defense, security, “sovereignty and integrity.”

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and Ministry of Home Affairs also claim the restricted apps allowed for data mining, and profiling by “elements hostile to national security and defense of India”, and could harm the privacy of its citizens.

The ban which escalates a border dispute between India and China, is estimated to affect “roughly one in three smartphone users in India,”
