British-Sri Lankan hip-hop star, M.I.A. has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
In a statement, the 44-year old singer whose real name Mathangi Arulpragasam, said she accepted the honor in tribute to her mother, who had once worked at the palace hand stitching the ribbons on the medals being given out.
The 44-year-old performer in her Instagram post also revealed that the particular one which Prince William – who was representing his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II -gave her, was actually made by her mum.
M.I.A.’s mother received asylum in the U.K. in 1986 after leaving Sri Lanka with her young children during a civil war.
