Nigerian Prisons Service becomes ‘Nigerian Correctional Service’

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed a bill into law changing the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) to Nigerian Correctional Service.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, who briefed State House correspondents yesterday said the Correctional Service is made up of Custodial and Non Custodial Service.

He said that the Non-Custodial Service was intended to be a place of reformation and that the person sentenced under this will not stay in custody but will have remediation.

According to him, the question of overcrowding and prison decongestion has also been addressed by the new Act.

The President, he said, has also signed Federal Universities of Agriculture (Amendment No.2) Act, 2019. He added that the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, will henceforth be known as Joseph S. Tarka University.
