Pope Francis approves Archbishop Kaigama to replace retiring Cardinal Onaiyekan in Abuja


Pope Francis has officially announced the retirement of His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan as the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Dioceses.

Onaiyekan, who confirmed his retirement at the age of 75, noted that it was long over due, and it was time for transition with a new leader to come and continue where he had stopped.

According to a letter from Rome, Pope Francis immediately appointed the Archbishop of Jos, Ignatius Kaigama, as the new Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja.

Speaker of the Department of Communications at the Abuja Diocese, Mr Josef Ishu, however, noted that the date for the installation of the new Archbishop would be communicated in due time.
