US Senate passes $2 trillion stimulus bill, as death toll passes 1,000


The US Senate has passed a $2tn coronavirus disaster aid bill that is the largest economic stimulus in US history.

It comes as the number of people with Covid-19 who have died in the US as at press time, lands at 1,050 deaths with 69,171 cases, according to a running total from Johns Hopkins University. 

The stimulus plan includes tax rebates, loans, money for hospitals and rescue packages. There will be direct payments of $1,200 to most American adults and aid to help small businesses pay workers.

Individuals who earn $75,000 or less would get direct payments of $1,200 each. Married couples with household income of up to $150,000 would receive $2,400 and an additional $500 per each child.

Southern Europe is now the centre of the pandemic, with Italy and Spain recording hundreds of new deaths every day.
